The World celebrates the “Day of Champagne”

Nowadays not only France but also the whole world celebrates the champagne’ s Birthday. The Frenchmen insist that exactly on August 4, 1668 monk Dom Pérignon invented this sparkling drink.

Under the law only France has the right to name its sparkling wine as “Champagne”. Although the production of sparkling wines in France had started since the 17th century, its mass production started only in the 19th century. And only in the early last century the French Deputy Parliament sets clear boundaries in the province of Champagne where it is allowed to grow grapes for production of champagne. Since then France has received an exclusive right to name its sparkling wines as “champagne”.

We will not question the priority of France in production of this excellent drink. Exactly due to many famous winemakers of this country the classical method of sparkling wine production is also used now. But its improvement is an achievement of our contemporaries. For instance, Artemovsk Winery produces classical sparkling wines according to the French technology over 60 years, but at the same time it adds and develops its technological innovations. For example, the winemakers of Artemovsk Winery were first who produced a red sparkling wine that is a mystery for French winemakers and excites real amazement up till now. Besides, sparkling muscatel Brut was also first produced here in Artemovsk Winery.

Today, in honor of the Day of Champagne we congratulate you to this festival and want to share with you some interesting facts of the world history of sparkling wines:

  • The first sparkling wine was produced as long ago as 2000 years before Champagne became famous around the world in the ancient Rome.
  • There is even a village in the Switzerland that is also called Champagne, and people there started to produce sparkling wine as long ago as in the 10th century, six centuries before the Frenchmen declared their priority.
  • Although champagne has only European “roots” champagne conquered America in the middle of the XIX century when the famous winemaker Charles Heidsieck left France and set off to the United States and took only a case of champagne with him. In America Heidsieck gained popularity very soon and got a nickname “Champagne Charles”.
  • Whatever we would not advise you to taste Chinese “champagne” because in China they call so a tea made in a peculiar manner. The Chinese “champagne” smacks of penicillin and has nothing to do with the classical sparkling wine. However, now our domestic sparkling wine KRIMART produced in Artemovsk Winery is supplied to the China.
  • Artemovsk Winery produces about 18 million bottles of sparkling wine a year. This is quite enough for every inhabitant of Australia to have a bottle of Artemovsk sparkling wine.
  • The grapes used for production of sparkling wine is gathered a bit earlier than for an ordinary wine that’s why the sugar level in it is somewhat lower and the acidity is higher.
  • There are 49 million bubbles in one bottle of a classical sparkling wine.
  • The pressure in a bottle of sparkling wine is about 6.3 kilogram per square centimetre which is about 3 times more than in an automobile tyre.
  • The speed of “sparkling” cork shot reaches 14 m/s and the height of the flight reaches 12 meters.
  • Muzzle (fr. Muselet from museler, “to muzzle”) is a special wire hood fixing the cork in the neck of the bottle.
  • The length of the wire – is 52 centimetres long when it’s spread out. One needs 80,151,000 muzzles of the sparkling wine bottles to wrap up the Earth along the equator (the length of equator of the planet Earth is 40,075.5 km).
  • A cork is a cork oak bark. This extraordinary tree grows in the West of Mediterranean basin and reaches 300 – 400-years age. 43 years shall pass before the first cork can be got of the tree bark: the first layer of the bark is removed after 25 years of the life of a tree, the second layer is removed after the following nine years and only after the following 9 years the bark can be used for production of corks.
  • Riddling is a process of gathering crust to the cork for its subsequent removal. The riddling was first used in the year 1816. It was invented by widow Clicquot’s cellar keeper Antoine Mueller. Due to him champagne became crystal-clear and transparent.
  • In the Artemovsk Winery underground galleries riddlers turn the bottles with future sparkling wine every day so that this magic drink could become crystal-clear. During one shift a riddler turns about 80 thousand of bottles.
  • The maximum depth of Artemovsk Winery underground caves is 85 meters.
  • The Artemovsk Winery experts have identified that there are exactly 365 reasons for having a glass of sparkling wine in the year!
